Pregnancy and Gestational Diabetes

Gestational Diabetes is a kind of diabetes that only pregnant women get. In fact, the word gestational means “during pregnancy.” If a woman gets diabetes or high blood sugar when she is pregnant, but she never had it before, then she has gestational diabetes.

Women diagnosed to have GDM are at increased risk of future diabetes predominantly type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) as are their children. Gestational diabetes typically develops around or after the 24th week of pregnancy. Women with gestational diabetes usually have normal blood sugar levels during the first trimester, allowing the body and body systems of the fetus to develop normally.

For women with gestational diabetes, a healthy diet including a balance of foods from all the food groups, giving you the nutrients, vitamins, and minerals needed for a healthy pregnancy helps to keep blood sugar levels in the ideal target range.
