Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is an inflammatory condition with a set of symptoms due to elevated androgens (male hormones) in women. It is a medical problem in which level of sex hormones – estrogen and progesterone – of women go haywire which induces growth of small ovarian cysts. Disruption of menstrual cycle, fertility issues, cardiac problems and unwarranted changes in appearance are some of the implications of PCOD.

Risk factors include obesity, not enough physical exercise, and a family history of someone with the condition. Diagnosis is based on two of the following three findings: no ovulation, high androgen levels, and ovarian cysts. Recent research suggests a link with gut health and food sensitivities like gluten and dairy.

PCOS include irregular or no menstrual periods, heavy periods, excess body and facial hair, acne, pelvic pain, difficulty getting pregnant, and patches of thick, darker, velvety skin. The fat is predominantly around the abdominal area. Symptoms begin to show up around puberty & adolescence with the start of menstruation.

A low GI(Glycemic Index) diet, in which a significant part of total carbohydrates are obtained from fruit, vegetables, and whole-grain sources, has resulted in greater menstrual regularity than a macronutrient-matched healthy diet. Food sensitivities may aggravate the condition.
